Firefighters injured in roof collapse

BERNARDSTON - Three fire fighters sustained minor injuries on late Saturday night while dealing with a collapsed roof at dairy farm.

Firefighters responded to a roof collapse around 9 p.m. on Saturday at River Maple Farm at 250 Brattleboro Road, according to Bernardston Fire Chief Peter A. Shedd. While attempting to remove heavy snow from the barn which housed 30 dairy cows, three firefighters fell through a different section of the roof.

Two firefighters were treated at the scene. The third firefighter was transported to Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, where he received eight stitches and was treated and released for multiple bruises. Northfield Firefighters assisted with the rescue of the three Bernardston firefighters.

Shedd said half of the barn remained in usable condition. But he added that the farmer was in the process of moving the dairy cows to another barn.
